K 650: A Mini Review
By Dave Reed
Given Juan Kouyoumdjian's back-to-back wins in the Volvo Ocean Race (with ABN AMRO One and Ericsson 4), this 21-foot, dinghy-like sportboat from the man himself should have the chops to muscle its way into the crowded 20-something sporty market. This $65,000 European import has more than a few unique traits to separate it from the flock, however. More to the "Open" design style, the 1,345-pounder is just over 8 feet wide, has a pronounced chine, and twin rudders. The rotating carbon wing mast is placed well aft in the boat to accommodate a 188-sq.ft. genoa for light-air power. There's no bulb keel; just a swing-up, high-aspect fin. The French builder, Yum Boats, builds the K650s in Thailand, and they're being imported to the East Coast by Yum Boats USA. www.yum-boats.com
