Maritimo 550
By Jon Meade
Whether you aim to engage in the hard-charging fishing game or simply cruise to delightful Caribbean destinations, you'll find a Maritimo to suit.
The open-bridge version scheduled for the Miami show comes ready to fish straight from the factory, sporting a custom-built hard-top, Bausch American tower, 38-foot Rupp triple-spreader outriggers and gorgeous custom helm chairs by Murray Products.
The Maritimo 550's engine room, a well-planned and executed space that should satisfy even the most demanding skipper, boasts dual C-18 Caterpillar diesels, each delivering 1,000 hp. Her performance figures proved most acceptable. We managed a top speed of 36 knots at 95 percent load turning 2,330 rpm, and she reached a fairly common 30-knot cruise at 1,960 rpms, burning a total of just more than 70 gph. Drop that back to an even more economical 25 knots, and you get a fuel flow of less than 60 gph.
But the incredible range is what really sets this boat apart: She can travel more than 1,700 miles on a single fill-up when running at displacement speed.
Interior The enclosed-bridge version sports the same engines, differing only by the absence of a few fishing features. The enclosed bridge comes from the factory with more of a cruising mission; however, both vessels offer three double staterooms and unabashed luxury throughout. Maritimo's craftsmen create superb cabinetry and joinery, using exotic wood veneers and plush leathers. Substantial headroom — more than seven feet in many places — loads of stowage, a well-equipped galley and drop-dead-gorgeous bathrooms all typify Maritimo's attention to detail. At the same time, Maritimo uses space-age ingredients that look the part but offer improved durability. The Amtico flooring, for example, looks like fine wood but lasts indefinitely.
