MJM 29z: A Sociable Weekender
By Chris Cornell
Performance- sailboat entrepreneur Bob Johnstone emphasizes two characteristics when describing his new 29-foot power cruiser: First is its stiff, lightweight epoxy-composite construction, which leads to exceptional fuel economy. Second is its "sociability," by which he means that the boat's seating and general layout make spending a day or a weekend aboard a truly pleasant experience for the owners and their passengers.
When Johnstone introduced his first powerboat — the MJM 34z — in August 2003, he struck a chord. Featuring a cored laminate of E-glass and Kevlar, the strong, quiet weekender offered owners an enviable combination of passenger comfort, speed, a classic look, shallow draft, maneuverability and low maintenance.
MJM Yachts has since sold a remarkable 43 of the 34-footers. That prompted Johnstone to again collaborate with designer Doug Zurn on a smaller, even more manageable version, the 29z, which will be introduced at the fall shows in Annapolis and Fort Lauderdale. The winning philosophy behind the 34z is mirrored in the new model, where thoughtfully proportioned seating wraps around the perimeter of the entire boat, starting under the hardtop and extending across the transom.
Johnstone wanted to produce a boat that a husband or wife could handle easily alone and one that invited the owner(s) to "take a spin." He notes, "The 29z will fit many of the existing lifts at today's waterfront homes and can be moved between seasonal homes or to new cruising grounds behind a large SUV."
