Is it a blast from the past? That could be your first impression of the Itama 50, a model with lines that resemble those of certain trend-setting muscle boats built some 40 years ago. In those days, the truly fast boats had wide beams and turned-down bows, and their style spoke of raw power more than sophistication. Design has evolved since then, but the look of those racers still evokes strong emotions for many boat lovers. Thus the Italian builder Itama aims to recapture those emotions. With the new 50, the company combines a somewhat retro look with modern technology. The result is a sportyacht that can pull your heartstrings yet perform very efficiently.

The 50 is equipped with everything you need for civilized cruising. The cockpit is deep and safe and the wraparound windshield gives good protection. A wet bar sits opposite the L-shaped settee; forward of it, the companion seat (opposite the helm) can be adjusted to face the guest lounge aft. It's a nice arrangement when the boat is tied up and the crew gets social. Sun shelter is provided by a Bimini top, which can be raised and lowered at the touch of a button. This is one of many comfort features that are easily at hand on the Itama.

Despite its sleek appearance, and the fact that the company bills the 50 as an open day yacht, this is a three-cabin cruiser, each with an en suite head. The master is forward and a room with bunks is nearby; the VIP cabin is aft at the stern so it's very private, but to access the aft cabin, you have to lift a section of the sun bed to reveal the steps (not an ideal arrangement if it's raining). Itama carves out space in the forward end of the interior for a compact yet wonderful salon with a galley opposite. The 50 can be a serious weekend cruiser if that's the way you want to use the boat. Plus, a wood-grain white finish and luxury fabrics make it feel as rich as it is powerful.
