Much seems to be made of the fact that Intrepid boats are often handpicked as tenders for some of the world's most impressive megayachts. That information certainly emphasizes the expert quality of a brand preferred by incredibly affluent owners. Yet even so, it's tough to think of these sexy and sophisticated boats as simply tenders. This is particularly true of the new 400 Cuddy, a well-engineered machine that's one part performance day yacht, one part cruiser.

The 400 Cuddy is a multipurpose boat. Its speed (almost 60 mph at top end) and cockpit layout can give an offshore angler an edge. The door built into the hull's side is ideal for divers. The cabin, with berths for four plus a full galley and private head, will go over big with families. For the beautiful people, there are drop-in filler cushions to convert cockpit lounges into sun beds worthy of the Mediterranean.

The 400 Cuddy wasn't built for a single mission; it can do many things. If an owner wants to take the design in one direction, though, he can by working with the builder. This is a semicustom boat, and Intrepid can accommodate special requests. Would you prefer a half-tower instead of a hardtop? It's yours. If you want your engines painted white to match the hull, that can be done too.

Like all models in the Intrepid fleet (14 to date), this boat boasts composite construction. Stringers are foam-cored, and most parts are resin-infused rather than handlaminated. On the 400, smart construction and good materials make for easy maintenance. Intrepid knows how to build a boat that's simple to care for. The cockpit liner, for instance, is cambered to keep water running to the sides and aft.

Can this new Intrepid take on the role of megayacht tender? Absolutely. But it's also a great weekender or a water-sports platform, and it delivers top quality, exciting performance and plenty of style.
